Our client is seeking a Biochemical Scientist / Engineer - Upstream with experience in cyanobacterial or microbiological biotechnology  to join their team based in the Midlands. This role involves designing and executing experiments to optimise cyanobacterial cultivation, developing culture conditions, and scaling up cultures from laboratory to pilot scale. The successful candidate will operate photobioreactors, support genetic engineering strategies, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop robust biological processes for industrial applications. This position offers the chance to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment focused on sustainable chemical production through biotechnology.

  • PhD in biotechnology, microbiology, bioengineering, synthetic biology, or a related field / experience.
  • Experience culturing cyanobacteria, microalgae, or other photosynthetic microorganisms
  • Strong experimental design and hands-on laboratory skills
  • Experience optimising microbial growth or production processes
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and scientific ownership
  • Collaborative mindset and effective communication skills
  • Proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working in a startup environment
